Dear SFUSD Community:
I am writing to you today with a heavy heart in response to the recent tragedy targeting the Jewish community in Washington, D.C. This act of violence and hatred stands in direct opposition to everything we value as a school district—and as a diverse, inclusive, and compassionate community.
At SFUSD, we are deeply committed to creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive schools for every student, staff member, and family. We recognize that this climate not only impacts those directly targeted, but reverberates throughout our entire community, especially among those who have experienced marginalization and discrimination.
We want to reaffirm our district’s core values of being student-centered, fearless, united, social justice-oriented, and diversity-driven. These values guide us in ensuring that all students—regardless of race, identity, or background—feel seen, valued, and supported in our schools.
Hate has no place in our community. We stand in solidarity with our Jewish students, families, and staff—and with all communities who face acts of bias, violence, or exclusion. Especially as we acknowledge Jewish American Heritage Month in May, we must always continue our work to foster empathy, understanding, and justice in our classrooms and school communities.
We know that incidents like this can cause pain, fear, and uncertainty. If you or someone you know needs support, please know that help is available. We encourage you to reach out to your school counselors, wellness staff, or other trusted adults on campus who are here to listen and offer guidance. A full list of district and community resources is available below.
As educators and caregivers, we play a critical role in shaping the values and future of the next generation. Let us recommit ourselves to ensuring that every school remains a place where all students feel safe to learn, grow, and thrive.
In community,
Dr. Maria Su
Superintendent of Schools
